Sliding doors in Buxted for 1980s houses and older homes
Buxted lies just north-east of Uckfield on the A272, with its own station on the Uckfield line to London Bridge. The parish also covers Five Ash Down, Heron's Ghyll and High Hurstwood.
A village that moved
Buxted is unusual. In the early 19th century the 2nd Earl of Liverpool bought Buxted Park and extended it, and the old village was cleared to make room. By 1836 the centre had moved to where it is now, leaving the 13th-century church of St Margaret the Queen standing alone in the park. The park is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the house a hotel.
That history is why most of Buxted's houses are not especially old. The main housing area grew on the former Britts farmland, now largely covered by houses along Britts Farm Road built in the 1980s; the 17th-century Britts farmhouse still stands among them. The village also had a long link with the poultry trade: Buxted Chickens had factories here and at Five Ash Down, and the Buxted site, closed in the 1980s, now belongs to the Woodland Trust.
Planning
Buxted does not appear on Wealden's list of conservation areas, and the village itself sits outside the High Weald National Landscape, although part of the parish lies within it. For most houses, a replacement door in the existing opening needs no planning permission. Listed buildings in the parish still need consent.
What usually suits
The 1980s houses here often have a patio door of about 2.4 metres that is ready for replacement. A two-pane aluminium slider fits that opening directly, without new steelwork. Where a later extension has been added, a three-pane slider across the new back wall is the common request.
Illustrative example of a typical job
Two-pane aluminium sliding door, 1980s house in Buxted
The house: A 1980s detached house on the former Britts farmland in Buxted, with a 2.4 metre patio opening onto the back lawn.
The spec: A two-pane aluminium slider, about 2400 by 2100 mm, one panel sliding and one fixed, anthracite outside and white inside, low threshold.
Typically £5,350 to £9,250, supplied and fitted, including VAT.
The opening was already the right width, so this is a straight swap. The spread in the range comes from glass spec, colour and threshold choice.
